Interview with Hostos Lincoln 12th Grader - His College Process

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of sitting down and interviewing Donatto, a senior from Hostos Lincoln. Donatto walked me through his very own college decision process and shed some light on how he managed to choose despite getting many different offers. Donatto has been an SEO scholar since 9th grade, is the highest ranking guy in our class, and is graduating with the degree in a couple of weeks! Having so many options to choose from, read our interview to find out what school he ultimately picked! Jehna (interviewer): To start us off, Donatto, how many colleges did you apply to? Donatto: Hmmm... well... let me think... three CUNY... three SUNY.... and...Ummm...*counts on fingers* ... oh! Fifteen privates. Jehna: WHAT! FIFTEEN! So that's like... Donnatto: Yep, twenty-one schools altogether. Jehna: Why so many? Donatto: Well there were three safety, three target, two reaches, and seven QuestBridge. Jehna: QuestBridge? Donatto: Yea, it's a scholarship, like...

This week students from Hostos have been contemplating whether or not they believe community college should be free, and why. Taking advantage of free community college classes themselves, the students had real-life experiences to back up their reasons. Leonor, one of our juniors who take classes at Hostos CC feel colleges should be tuition-free because "everyone has the right to an education. It's not fair that private colleges thrive off the money of the wealthy since it doesn't affect their pockets. Many people here in the Bronx can't get a higher education than high school because they don't want to take out college loans." This is an issue lots of people of color face. The financial stress of paying tution, amongst all other expeneses that come with college, as well as keeping up with the day-to-day cost of living can hinder some to going back to school. Britney, a senior at Hostos, said "paying for knowledge is preposterous. When you know b...

#FreeCommunityCollege

Week 3: April 16-20th is "Community College for Everyone" week. The debate surrounding whether community college should be free is very much alive. An opinion in the New York Times shows us why it should be! Opinion | When Community College is Free

#ThisIsCollege

Week 2: April 9-13th was "This is College" week. This was an awesome time to profile the exciting range of educational programs at Hostos Community College. April is Community College Awareness Month!

Students from Hostos are participating in the College Promise campaign to appreciate our education from Hostos Community College. Being community college awareness month, now is a great time to cherish and reflect on all that our college bring to us. For the month of April, follow us through a movement to celebrate programs that open the doors to so many hardworking students to obtain a college education, and to make sure education from community colleges don't go under-appreciated.

Gun Control March: Update

Check out one of Hostos' very own students speaking to a crowd of activists in last week's #WALKOUT. The turnout was MUCH bigger than expected! AMAZING! It was warming to see so many students take a stand for what they believe in, in this case, protecting lives of students across the country (including their own!). Despite the 20 degree weather, Hostos Community College showed once again that they won't be silenced. Also, check our Flickr page under "Our Media" to see more pictures from the march. The nation-wide protest was featured on Patch Network in NYC. Check link!  Patch Network Article
